African Youth Advocate foundation has organized a free breast cancer screening for women at Kpeshie Maternity in Teshie, Accra to mark the breast cancer awareness month.
This comes on the back of breast cancer being a major cause of female cancer deaths in the world particularly in Ghana the need for more action to reduce its occurrences.
The screening program which was themed “Early Detection Can Save Your Life” was done in partnership with Kpeshie Maternity on the 23rd October 2021.
The program saw many women located at Teshie and its environs screen for breast cancer while intensively providing education on the causes, symptoms and possible preventive measures of breast cancer as well as championing a campaign for early detection and treatment.
The programs cordinator of the maternity, Eunice Fianko said she believes the program would go a long to reduce the rising spate of breast cancer among women in Teshie.
According to her, only few women in Teshie are aware of the disease that kills nearly 41,000 women each year globally.
“I am very excited that African Youth Advocate has partnered with us to bring this program to life. They came at a time where this program is needed in Teshie. Out of over 90 women that came for the screening, only 9 are aware of breast cancer and 2 have ever sceened for breast cancer before. This is very serious and alarming. I believe that with the knowledge that this women have received at this program, they will take it back to their various homes and communities and make a change. I am certain that this program will bring back positive reports of breast cancer reduction in Teshie.”
The month of october is celebrated as a breast cancer awareness month to help increase attention and awareness of breast cancer.
